CUSTER'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS / INFAMOUS NARRATIVES OF THE AMERICAN WEST, A STORY OF EXPLORATION, EXPLOITATION, AND SLAUGHTER ON THE AMERICAN PLAINS. Beginning with the 1867 Hancock expedition and ending with the Washita Kansas campaign, this is mandatory reading for all those interested in the history of the American plains, Western Expansion, and the officially sanctioned genocide of indigenous peoples. First published serially in Galaxy Magazine from 1872-74, this is the first edition in book form, issued only two years before Custer was himself killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn, the so-called "Custer's Last Stand." Custer failed to record his many tactical failures other other episodes that may have tarnished his image. Of particular interest is Custer's description of the corruption of U.S. Government agencies that were established to provide food and supplies to the Indians on state-mandated reservations, with the greatest vitriol assigned to certain Indian Bureau agents. According to Tai Luther, "Custer wrote in an entertaining style and although Benteen referred to this book as 'My Lie on the Plains,' we still list it as High Spot 7." Although the events of the present autobiography are today impossible to comprehend, they cannot be forgotten. From the Dorothy Sloan Collection of Western Americana, with her "D.S." monograph on verso of final binder's blank.Luther, Custer's High Spots 7. Howes C981. Dustin 31. Rader 1011. Graff 961.
