The book is signed and inscribed by Mrs. Pickett, General Pickett's wife; the lengthly inscription, contains a reference to page 408 where the book addresses Lincoln's looking upon the battlefield at Cemetery Ridge. Mrs. Pickett claimed to have first met General Pickett in 1852, but did not marry him until 1863. After their wedding, she accompanied her new husband to his new assignment as head of the Department of North Carolina, headquartered in Petersburg. The book presents her personal accounts of her husband and their life in the military. The book, however, is primarily an account of his life and military campaigns, with insights into the lives of other Civil War notables as well. The book provides first-hand insights into his life and career of General Pickett, and devotes much effort into unit and men that Pickett led. With military service in the Mexican-American War, and on the American frontier, General Pickett, participated in many of the most important campaigns and battles of the war. He saw heavy action at Seven Pines, Seven Days, Fredericksburg, the Siege of Suffolk, Gettysburg, Newborn, Petersburg, and other locations. An extraordinary first-hand account of Pickett’s famous division and its leaders and men. The book also includes an Appendix that is a biographical sketch of General Picket.
