Description: Scarce type 1 Saxon M1849 Artillery Faschinenmesser short sword in brass mounted scabbard. Original period manufacture. A 19 inch, polished steel blade with a flat edge spine. Blade is tight to hilt and a machete shaped. Weight, approx. 3.2 pounds. Cast brass one piece ribbed grip with a straight guard and a slight S curve to the ends. On the obverse ricasso is the royal Cypher for Friedrich August II, King of Saxony 1836-1854 and on the reverse the makers logo of P.D.L. The blade is well used, showing scattered bruising. The weapon is unit marked 12.A.2.10 on guard. The unit displayed is12th (Royal Saxon) Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd company, weapon 10, a unit founded in 1867.
