Description: Giovanni Desimone *RARE* Large Clay Sculpture, Leda and the Swan, Italy, MCM,Signed OriginalDimensions: 17 3/4" High, 14" Depth, 9.5" Wide. Weight: 16 lbs 13 oz. Glossy glaze, multi-colored, hand built clay sculpture, surely produced at the height of Desimone's productivity, circa 1960's. This unique Desimone is a fully realized piece of sculpture, as opposed to much of Giovanni Desimone's work, which most often has a useful purpose, such as vases, bottles, platters, plates and candlesticks. While his work is often fantastical, the mythical subject of Leda and the Swan seems unique, as most of Desimone's work depicts scenes from the daily lives of the people of Palermo, Sicily. This sculpture was the centerpiece of a valuable collection dedicated to Desimone's work. It was on view in a glass display case and rarely touched. As such, it is in the same condition now as it was when it was purchased in Italy decades ago.In all of our research, we have not yet come across another piece of his work depicting this subject. Nor have we come across many purely decorative sculptures, rather than the functional pieces he generally created. It is truly unique!
