Giving up the Ghost - Thomas Rowlandson Medical Caricature Satirical Print

Description: Giving up the Ghost or One Too Many - Medical Caricature Satirical Print. Artist: Thomas Rowlandson, Artist: After Richard NewtonLondon, T. Tegg c. 1813EtchingOriginal hand-colouring260x380mmA rare medical caricature. Particularly fine, fresh, original hand-colouring. A scene in an impoverished, deceased patient's bedroom. The corpse of a skinny, ugly, deceased patient, wearing a ragged bedgown and nightcap, lies on a small wooden bed. Beside him an exhausted, fat, elderly physician sits sleeping in a chair, his tongue protruding from between his lips, his hands in his pockets, and his gold topped cane propped against the bedhead. An astonished undertaker peers through the door, evidently which man is the corpse, while Death holding his Dart, peers through the lattice window. A chamberpot is under the bed and various medicine bottles and a mortar and pestle lie scattered on the floor.British Museum Catalogue Code BM12153This is part of a family collection which I have been asked to sell.
