Description: View more great items Gordon Snidow is concerned with chronicling the West of today . . . to record through his paintings the everyday events of life on a cattle ranch and the features full of history in the faces of the people who live this life. Born in Missouri, Gordon moved with his family to Oklahoma, where he spent most of his youth around a farming environment which made him very aware of the working relationship between man and animals. He later moved to California where he studied at the Los Angeles Art Center School of Design and after graduation, he became a commercial and technical illustrator continuing his creation of western art during his spare time. In 1971 his dream came true and the demand for his works enabled him to leave the commercial field and devote full time to interpreting the contemporary West. His dedication and skill have gained him national recognition and appreciation from not only critics and collectors, but also fellow artists. Snidow is a member of the Cowboy Artist of America and has served the organization as secretary-treasurer, vice-president and president and is president elect for 1979, which makes him the first man to serve twice in that office. He has been awarded five Gold Medals and six Silver Medals from the CAA for works in four different media which is evidence of his versatile talent. In 1977 and 1978 he was recipient of the Western Art Associates’ Best of Show award, which is selected from the gold medal winners of the CAA, and also received the Purchase Award by the Phoenix Art Museum, who chose his work for display in their permanent collection; in 1978 he received “Most Popular Award” for his oil. His portraits of the old cowboys and ranch hands are so sensitive to his subjects’ personalities and conditions that viewers of his works are touched by their imagery and collectors cherish them as if it were a portrait of an old friend or relative. He had definitely triumphed in his goal of preserving the history of the Twentieth Century cowboy.
