Description: This is a vintage antique sample of barbed wire fencing. This sample features a John W. Govier patent, dated May 23, 1893. This wire is called "Goviers Two Point Clinched Pin & Small Metal Plate Barb on One of Two Lines" by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 416-B). This wire features two round line wires twisted together. Barbs are two pointed made from a round pin, and a small metal plate. Plate is cut into a rectangular shape, with a long opening at center. Pin is bent into a staple shape and placed straddling one line wire. Plate is laid over the two legs of the pin and points bent outwards. Second line is then twisted with first and wrapped on the backside of the plate. Sample is 18" in length and has four barbs. Sample shows heavy oxidation. Barbs are well spaced, and cut is well centered. There are no bent, broken, or missing barbing points.
