Title: Grandeur and Misery of Victory Author: Georges Clemenceau Translated (from the French) by: F. M. Atkinson Publisher: Harcourt, Brace and Company (New York) Date of Publication: April 12, 1930 STATED FIRST EDITION (Note: Copyright page also states: "Published simultaneously in the leading countries of the world.") Pages: 432 Hardback. WITH DUST JACKET About 9 inches tall by about 6.5 inches wide. Please see photos # 6 & 7 for Table of Contents. A physician, turned journalist, turned politician, Georges Clemenceau (1841 - 1929) was Prime Minister of France from 1905 to 1909 and again from 1917 to 1920. Known as Le Tigre ("The Tiger"), he was a major figure in the Treaty of Versailles and an advocate of reparations and other measures against Germany. Increasingly disillusioned during the 1920's, he prophetically stated: "This is not peace. It is an armistice for twenty years." Clemenceau had not planned to write his memoirs. However, in 1929, he was spurred to do so by the appearance of Marshal Foch's own memoir, which was highly critical of him. Clemenceau was only able to finish a first draft before his death in November of that year. As indicated by newspaper articles reprinted on the back of the dust jacket, there was much speculation that his posthumously published book would be withheld or at least censored. Apparently, the book as originally drafted was not altered. As you read it, you get a great appreciation of Clemenceau's bitterness, frustration, and indignation, directed at many different parties. The work ends with a open letter to American President Calvin Coolidge, protesting the terms of his country's debt repayment to the US, and stating with irony: "France is not for sale, even to her friends." Please see above for full description of condition and for photos. Sold as is. Attention US Buyers: I will ship by USPS Media Mail or USPS Priority Mail, your choice. Please note that if you have a Military Mail address (e.g. APO), I must ask that you choose USPS Priority Mail as it is my understanding that USPS Media Mail is not reliable to Military Mail addresses.
