GROUCHO (JULIUS) MARX - DOCUMENT SIGNED 04/02/1974 - HFSID 257562 GROUCHO MARX Groucho Marx signs a document with Erin Fleming. Photocopied Document signed: "Groucho Marx", 2 p, 8¼x11¾. Signed on page 2. No place, 1974 April 2. Agreement between Julius Marx, aka Groucho Marx, and Erin Fleming, providing for Fleming to receive one-half of the net cash proceeds from two enterprises: the licensing to Abe Shapiro & Associates of Groucho's name and caricature for merchandising; and the syndication of his TV program, You Bet Your Life, in consideration of Fleming's efforts to promote these two projects. Marx himself shall have the option to terminate the agreement during his lifetime, for any reason, but no heir of his shall have the right to terminate it after his death. A line for Fleming's signature is left blank. Marx met Erin Fleming, an unemployed actress, in the early 1970s. She soon became his live-in companion and de facto manager. She did much to promote Groucho's name and memory, but pushed the elderly and failing man too hard in the opinion of some. Marx was right to worry about Fleming's finances after his death. In 1976, his son Arthur sought Fleming's removal, on the grounds that she was manipulating his father. Groucho testified successfully in court on her behalf, but after his death in 1977 Fleming's claim on proceeds from the Groucho Marx enterprises was tied up in more litigation. Eventually, she was deemed to have acted improperly in the absence of a managing license and ordered to pay half a million dollars - which she didn't have - to the Marx estate. Destitute, Fleming was reportedly living as a street person by the mid-1990s. Fine condition.
