Description: Read First MESSAGE ME THE COLOR OF FRAME YOU WOULD LIKE AFTER YOU PURCHASE THE ITEM. If you want the engraving without a frame I will be happy to refund you $10. Item Description This listing is for an authentic Gustave Doré wood engraving titled “The Daughter of Herod Receiving the Head of John the Baptist." covering the events from Matthew 14:8-10. This illustration was carefully removed from one of the more renowned bibles of the 19th century: The La Grande Bible de Tours published in France in 1866. THIS ENGRAVING IS TAKEN FROM THE ORIGINAL 1ST EDITION for which it was commissioned (I included a picture of the Bible as evidence). This Bible is extremely hard to track down, especially in the US. These images have been reprinted many times over the years, so this is a rare chance to get the original print from the first run. Such an engraving would make a unique and historic Christian gift for anyone on your “hard to buy for” list. Each print will measure around 9.5” X 11.5” Gustave Doré was one of the most sought after illustrators of his time and many of the images from this bible are truly awe inspiring. It is why I decided to remove them and sell them separately. I included additional information about him below if you want to know more. What is special about these engravings are that they are among the largest in size that he did. The Bible itself was a massive 17” X 13” probably weighing around forty pounds. Again, these are not copies so I will only have one of each to sell. All together, I will have around 120 of these listed. So feel free to check out my store and pick out the ones you like the most. Of course, I am happy to combine shipping. I only charge the exact shipping rate and will refund you the difference after the sale (sorry but I have not found a better way to do it yet). You have the option of purchasing the print only, or you can choose a frame. The frame will be roughly 11.5” X 14.5” and you can choose from the following colors: Black, Brown, or “Metallic Gray.” If you want a high quality frame, I recommend purchasing the print only. Item Condition I made sure to take as many pics as possible. So please take a close look at the pictures for exact condition as I tried to take them from every angle possible. After all, some people's “perfect” is another person's “mauled by a bear.” These illustrations are over 150 years old so you will likely find some stains on the paper. There will be no tears but please take a very close look at the back of the print as that will be your best indication of the condition. Most stains are hidden by the image on the front. Shipping and Warranty This item will be shipped out via USPS. I care about my customers deeply and that extends to making sure they get their item as soon as possible. Unless I am dead or in a coma at the hospital, this item will be at the post office the same day if it is purchased before 4:00 PM MST. Otherwise, it will be there first thing in the morning. If it is 20 degrees below zero and 3 feet of snow . . . refer to the above statement. It will still be at the post office. I am always happy to process a return for any reason. Just reach out to me and I will help you with the process. More about Gustave Doré Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (January 6th, 1832 – January 23rd, 1883) was a French artist, as a printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor. He is best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings, especially those illustrating classic books, including 241 illustrating the Bible. These achieved great international success, and he is the best-known artist in this printmaking technique, although his role was normally as the designer only; at the height of his career some 40 block-cutters were employed to cut his drawings onto the wooden printing blocks, usually also signing the image. In all he created some 10,000 illustrations, the most important of which were "duplicated in electrotype shells that were printed ... on cylinder presses", allowing very large print runs as steel engravings, "hypnotizing the widest public ever captured by a major illustrator", and being published simultaneously in many countries. The drawings given to the block-cutters were often surprisingly sketch-like and free. Although he lacked the usual training in an academy, his paintings were successful during his lifetime, but at least his early paintings of religious and mythological subjects, some extremely large, now tend to be regarded as "grandiloquent and of little merit".From the late 1860s onwards, he painted smaller landscapes and costumed genre scenes. More about the Bible La Grande Bible de Tours, issued in 1866, was a large folio ("grand in folio") edition published in two volumes simultaneously by Mame in Tours, France and by Cassell & Company in the United Kingdom in 1866. The French translation known as the Bible de Tours had originally been published in 1843 and was done by Jean Jacques Bourassé (1813–1872) and Pierre Désiré Janvier (1817–1888). The illustrations were immensely successful and have been reproduced countless times worldwide, influencing the visual arts and popular culture in ways difficult to measure. The series comprises 139 plates depicting scenes from the Old Testament, including the deuterocanonical books, and 81 from the New Testament.
