As an instructor at the Springfield YMCA School, he played in the first public game of basketball, scoring the only basket for the faculty team in a 5-1 loss. Lynn St. John (1876-1950) was longtime athletic director at the Ohio State University, and was inducted into the basketball hall of fame as a contributor in 2006 for having served on the NCAA rules committee with Naismith. .
