We only use environmentally sustainable sources of salvaged woodfrom trees that have been felled in a storm or removed by landscape companiesand then saved from ending up in the landfill. Once the tree logs have been rescued by us, they are brought to ourUrban Sawmill, Soul of the Wood Sawmill, to be milled and slabbed into usablelumber by our Woodland Mills HM130Max Sawmill. Slabs are then processed throughour Oliver Helix Planer to smooth them down. The tricky part comes here wherethe edges are de-barked, and then the live edge goes through a process thatcleans it, while keeping its natural texture. These are freshly sawmilled logs,so they have cracks, checks and voids in them and those defects need to beproperly filled with either epoxy, crushed stone, wood splines, screws,corrugated staples or a combination of these. This is essential so the woodhalts any further cracking. Once this process is finished, we finally have ablank canvas to work with. The chosen design for the sign is then hand sketchedonto the wood surface and then the actual carving can take place. Once the signis carved, every piece boasts intricate patterns and crisp lettering, and the carvedaway sections painted, allowed to dry, then sanded smooth. To preserve the quality of our wood signs, each piece istreated with a protective finish, ensuring that it remains a cherished keepsakefor generations to come. Coats of tung oil are applied, allowed to cure intothe wood for a day and then the process of final poly coats is performedrendering the finished product. Polyacrylic and polyurethanes procured from alocal government recycling program are used that are environmentally friendly,sustainable and to help keep cost better contained. Outdoor signs we also offeras an upgrade and upcharge Helmsman UV Spar Urethane - it’s pricy but the best.We can’t cheat this process and still maintain our standard of quality, so ourWood Signs have this progression they must go through before we can send outour signs to our customers.
