Description: New York: Harper & Brothers, 1886. Sweeping wood engraved panorama featuring a colossal Statue of Liberty, standing out in bold relief against the water and sky and the lower end of Manhattan. At the end of the island Castle Garden is visible; this was America's first official immigration center, serving in that capacity from 1820 to 1892, the year in which Ellis Island opened. At the right is the newly completed Brooklyn Bridge. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 by President Grover Cleveland; this large folding Supplement to Harper's Weekly is dated October 30, 1886. There are repaired tears, see pics. When the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in 1886, it was a shiny brown color, similar to a penny. The statue's copper panels oxidized and changed color over time due to a gradual weathering process. The copper's surface began to oxidize as soon as it was assembled, forming a dark brown mineral coating called tenorite. This tenorite, along with oxidized copper, then combined with sulfuric acid in the air to create the statue's current green color. The copper also reacts with air and moisture to form a copper carbonate called patina, which protects the copper underneath from further weathering.
