HAROLD LLOYD - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/04/1946 - HFSID 71630 HAROLD LLOYD Harold Lloyd sends a typed letter to Red Skelton on behalf of the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce and Civic Association thanking Red Skelton for his contribution. Typed Letter Signed: "Harold Lloyd" as President, Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce and Civic Association, 1p, 8½x11. Beverly Hills, California. 1946 February 4. The comedian of the silent screen writes to a comedian of radio and television, Red Skelton. In full: "Please accept our sincere thanks for your generous contribution toward the success of our Twenty-first Annual Banquet at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on January 28th. It was indeed a pleasure to have you and Mrs. Skelton as our guests, and your contribution was a high-light of the evening." Also signed by Ervin D. Armstrong, Chairman, and Roger Graham, Co-Chairman. Comedian/actor Harold Lloyd (1894-1971) made his film debut in 1912 with the Edison company as an extra. Over the next few years, he had bit parts in Keystone and Universal comedies. In 1916-1917, Lloyd appeared in about 100 shorts for Hal Roach as Lonesome Luke, a character they created. In 1917, Roach experimented with a new character for Lloyd: an average young man wearing a pair of oversized black horn-rimmed glasses that were to become Lloyd's trademark for the rest of his brilliant comedy career. Despite his bookish look, Lloyd's films were characterized by comedy situations involving dangerous stunts in which no doubles were ever used, resulting in Lloyd being nicknamed "The King of Daredevils". Lloyd dangling from atop a skyscraper with nothing to hold on to but the hand of a clock (Safety Last, 1923) is one of the most famous scenes in the history of film comedy. In the 1920s, his films often outdrew those of his rivals, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, at the box office. Two file holes at top. Fine condition.
