Griffith, E., C. Hamilton-Smith, and E. Pidgeon. Vol. V. G. B. Whittaker. London, United Kingdom.Charles Hamilton Smith: A well known British artist of topographical, antiquarian and natural history subjects, Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith was educated first at Richmond, Surrey and then trained as an officer in the Austrian military Academy at Louvain. C. Hamilton Smith joined the British Army in 1797 as a volunteer and served both in the West Indies and in Holland. He then assumed the post of quartermaster for the Walchereren Expedition before finishing his military career in the United States. Charles Hamilton Smith retired from the military in 1820 and settled in Plymouth, England. Setting up an artists' colony there, Hamilton Smith now devoted himself full-time to both writing and illustrating his own books. Some of his best known works include, "Selections of Ancient Costume of Great Britain" and "Ireland, Costume of the Original Inhabitants of British Isles" and "Natural History of the Human Species". This original etching and engraving of a female harp seal is indicative of Charles Hamilton Smith's fine, early art in the field of natural history. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). . While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
