Known for Confederate General Robert E. Lee's audacious and successful tactics, it is also remembered for Union General Joseph Hooker's tactical missteps. The 11th Corps, under Union command, faced significant challenges at Chancellorsville. This Corps was stationed on the Union right flank and was particularly vulnerable to attack. On May 2, 1863, General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson led a daring flank march, catching the Union’s 11th Corps off-guard. As Jackson’s men descended upon the 11th Corps, panic ensued, leading to a chaotic Union retreat.Amid this retreat, Union Brigadier General George D. Cough’s division played a crucial role. His corps formed a defensive line to cover the retreat of the overwhelmed 11th Corps. This defensive maneuver helped prevent a complete rout of Union forces and allowed many soldiers to regroup with the main body of the Union army.Despite this, the battle ended in a Confederate victory, though it came at a high cost for the South, including the mortal wounding of Stonewall Jackson by friendly fire. Chancellorsville became a prime example of Lee’s tactical brilliance, but it also highlighted the growing resource challenges and losses that would eventually weigh heavily on the Confederate army.4o
