Description: ARCHIBALD JOSEPH CRONIN was born in Cardross, Scotland, in 1896. His medical education at the University of Glasgow was interrupted for two years during the first World War while he served as surgeon sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. After four years of practice in South Wales and a year of study of pulmonary disabilities in the coal fields for the Ministry of Mines, he moved to London and built up a successful practice in the West End. In 1930 an enforced long vacation gave him the opportunity he had long wanted to try to write a novel. At the end of three months the novel—a quarter of a million words—was finished and had been mailed to a publisher. That novel was Hatter’s Castle. In 1937 his fifth novel The Citadel, swept the English speaking world. The Keys of the Kingdom added another brilliant chapter to a truly remarkable and distinguished career. Those who have become acquainted with Dr. Cronin in his later novels will find in Hatter's Cattle the same strength, the same beauty, the same universal appeal which characterize his other works. This special edition of HATTERS CASTLE by A. J. Cronin has been made available so the Armed Forces of the United States through on arrangement with the original publisher, Little. Brown and Company. Inc.. Boston. Editions for the Armed Services, Inc., a non-profit organization established by the Council on Books in Wartime
