Typed Letter Signed: "Helen Keller" in pencil, 1p, 7¼x10½. Westport House, Westport, Connecticut, 1948 January 4. To Victor Kadish. In full: "How kind you were to remember us the first Christmas in our second home at Arcan Ridge! The fire last year consumed all our material possessions, but another wealth it could not destroy - our place in the thoughts and hearts of friends that keeps life sweet. Your tempting gift has been among the delicacies served at our festive gatherings, and there is enough left to give us a few more delicious morsels. Polly and I thank you ever so much, and we take pleasure in recalling the jolly hours we passed with you years ago at High River, redolent of wolf-willows and Chinook winds laden with wild fragrances. We hope that some day you may come to see us in our new home. With our united cordial greetings and the wish that the New Year may bring closer understanding between all peoples and a long step towards peace." Two years before she signed this letter, Keller had been named Counselor on International Relations for the American Foundation for Overseas Blind. Between 1946-1957, she would visit 35 countries on five continents on behalf of the organization. Author and lecturer HELEN KELLER (1880-1968) had been left blind and deaf as a result of illness at 19 months of age. She was taught to communicate with others by Anne Sullivan (1886-1936), whom Keller called "Teacher". Keller had moved into her home, Arcan Ridge, in Westport, Connecticut after Sullivan's death in 1936. The home was restored after the fire and Keller lived there until her death at age 87. MARY AGNES "POLLY" THOMSON was Keller's secretary (from 1914) and nurse and companion from 1922 until her death in 1960. Thomson accompanied Keller on both her goodwill trips and vacations. Lightly creased, slightly soiled. Chipped at blank left and right margins at lower horizontal fold. Fine condition.
