Description: Pictured is a beautiful three (3) gallon blue decorated ovoid stoneware jug offered for sale. The salt glazed jug is incised "HIGGINS & CO. - CLEVELAND" OHIO & "3" in small block lettering at the shoulder. It has a large flamboyant blue decoration with large leafed foliage, a drooping flower, & a spiral tendril up the center. The jug measures 14 5/8" in height, 6 3/4" in base diameter, & dates from 1845 - 1855. As seen, the jug is missing its thick wide handle. Amazingly, there is no damage whatsoever, no nicks, hairlines or repairs. The handle was probably broken off by the sheer weight of the container, ~15 lbs., plus 3 gallons of fluid, to weigh some 40 pounds total. A novel, seldom seen mark for blue decorated stoneware from northeastern Ohio..... Note: We'll refund any difference in shipping. Likewise, arrangements can possibly be made for delivery.
