Description: Antique Dr. Syntax Drawing After Nature The print is one of over thirty patterns in the Dr. Syntax series produced by Clews in the 1820's on dinner service wares made for the American market. The patterns are based on drawings by Thomas Rowlandson which, accompanied by stories written in rhyming couplets by William Combe, were originally published in the Poetical Magazine between 1809-21 and later in book form. The first series, parodying the then popular books about picturesque travels, appeared in the magazine between 1809-11 and was published as a book titled "Dr Syntax in search of the picturesque" Approx. 10.5" Condition: Excellent condition, crazing commensurate with age, minor imperfections to be expected.
