An activist known for his portrayal of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising has translated into many languages. From 1949 to 1966 he headed the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.Prior to World War II, he worked on the editorial staff of Der Moment, a major Jewish daily that appeared in Warsaw. After World War II, he became known for his books on the uprising against the German occupying army in the Warsaw Ghetto and other works concerning the life of Jews under the Nazis in Poland. He is also the author of a two-volume history of the Jews in Poland. He visited Israel where he lectured at the Hebrew University. On the morning of April 19, 1943, over two thousand troupes of Himmler's Waffen SS marched into the Warsaw Ghetto, intent on liquidating the last remnants of Jewish resistance in time for Hitler's birthday the next day. They were unable to do so until May 16, and this entailed the destruction of the ghetto house by house, block by block. The Jews had the choice of dying in the death camps or fighting to the death. Most of those who remained in the ghetto at the end chose the latter.
