Cleveland, Ohio, Specialty grocer Chandler & Rudd began operations in 1864. Stamped also on the back, but muddled. 1847: Justus von Liebig developed a concentrated beef extract as an inexpensive and nutritious substitute meat substitute. 1865: The Liebig Extract of Meat Company was established. George Christian Giebert, a German railway engineer, teamed with Liebig in formulating a development plan for production, and was thus able to claim to be the officially sanctioned producer of “Liebig's Meat Extract”. This claim was made elevate the status of The Liebig Company in competition with rival firms. This explains the emphasis on the signature denoting the “genuine” product. 1905: The print date for this publication as authored by S.T. Rorer. Sarah Tyson Rorer was an American food writer and is considered the first American dietitian. Liebig's company worked with popular cookery writers in various countries to popularize their products. As pictured within the booklet, the main factory and yards was in Uruguay, at Fray Bentos, one the largest industrial complexes in South America.
