Description: HOWARD CARTER. Howard Carter (1874–1939) was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist whose 1922 discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt’s “Valley of the Kings” proved to be one of the signal events in the history of archaeology. Over the next several years, the excavation of the tomb, personally supervised by Carter, yielded a fabulous hoard of artifacts (including a life-sized, solid gold sarcophagus) whose intrinsic value was matched by the wealth of historical data the treasures provided. AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED BY HOWARD CARTER APPROVING TO PROVIDE ENLARGED PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ANTIQUITIES OF KING TUTANKHAMUN’S Autograph note signed by Howard Carter approving to provide enlarged photographs of the antiquities of King Tutankhamun’s for exhibitions at the Ministry of Public Instruction and Egyptian Pavilion, reads in part: “I have no objection to the demand - further I could supply the photography…Howard Carter.” Handwritten in blue pencil at the bottom of a typed letter in French from H. Gaultier, the Inspector General of the Service des Antiquites, translated in full: “The Ministry of Public Instruction, by letter of November 16, asks for two series of enlarged photographs of Tutankhamun’s antiquities, one to serve as a model for the students of the School of Applied Arts and the other to be exhibited at the Egyptian Pavilion of the Liege Exhibition. We would be grateful if you would let us know if you have any objection to this request being granted. Please accept, Mr Carter, the assurance of my distinguished consideration.” “I HAVE NO OBJECTION TO THE DEMAND - FURTHER I COULD SUPPLY THE PHOTOGRAPHY,” CARTER RESPONDING TO H. GAULTIER’S REQUEST OF THE SERVICE DES ANTIQUITES, “THE MINISTRY OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION…ASKS FOR TWO SERIES OF ENLARGED PHOTOGRAPHS OF TUTANKHAMUN’S ANTIQUITIES…” Contains one page, measures 8.25 by 6.75 inches, created in Cairo, Egypt on November 19, 1929, and in very good condition with toning and two sets of filing holes to the left border.
