Description: This lot consists of 30 different Shirley Chisholm buttons and badges, primarily from her 1972 hopeful race to achieve the Democratic nomination for the presidency. It was assembled by a long-time collector of items pertaining to woman suffrage, woman’s rights, and woman candidates. It probably represents the largest single unit collection of Shirley Chisholm buttons ever offered. Chisholm, as most of you know, was the first African American woman ever to be elected to Congress, and the first African-American woman ever to run for the presidential nomination of a major party. All pins are in very good condition except for the very rare multi-candidate New York pin in the lower right and the photo pin in which her head is encircled by the symbol for the female gender. Several sideline notes—The three Feminist Party pins in the second row were distributed by the Feminist Party itself, which had been formed by activist Flo Kennedy in 1971 in large part to support Chisholm’s candidacy for president and disbanded soon after she had quit the race. The two small picture pins that appear together in the second row from the bottom both exist in two sizes, 3/4” and 15/16”, with the two larger pins, part of the offered collection here, showing more of her bust. The three spinner celluloids all come with their wooden spinner. This is a wonderful lot, and even the most advanced collector of Chisholm pins should find a few needed pins. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
