Description: On August 29, 2005, a massive hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico made its second landfall. It slammed into south Florida and the Keys first, after bringing devastating conditions to the Bahamas and Cuba. Florida was hit bad, but Katrina had much bigger plans, and she worked her way into the Gulf. The Gulf had the fuel she needed with its warm water, almost no wind shear, and moist air, causing her to explode into a massive and deadly category 5 hurricane. Katrina weakened slightly, and came in as a weak cat 4 or a strong cat 3 (reports vary). When she was in the middle of the Gulf as a cat 5, she was so massive that her clouds covered the entire Gulf! Katrina was initially pointed at southeastern Louisiana. I live in south Louisiana, and we headed to west Louisiana, near the TX border. I watched in horror as the reports came in about the devastation that our friends and family in south Mississippi were experiencing. New Orleans seemed to be spared for the most part, as the monster took a slight jog to the east, inundating the MS Gulf coast with a 25 foot storm surge, wind gusts of almost 200 MPH, and tornadoes. New Orleans was on the west side of the eye of the storm, and there was massive damage, but MS seemed to get it worse than us. A day later, all hell broke loose in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes, and over 3/4 of the ENTIRE city was under water... One for the history books. Katrina is tied with hurricane Harvey as the costliest storms on record ($125 BILLION each). Katrina also claimed 1,392 confirmed fatalities with another 652 still missing. This was a storm that changed many lives during the days and weeks that followed. Today we take a look at that history making hurricane. (Ironically enough, Hurricane Ida devastated my area of south LA in 2021, as well as several other areas, to the tune of $75.3 BILLION dollars, and on the anniversary of Katrina!) Today we have up for grabs a bundle of Katrina DVD specials and two magazines. First up is the Spike Lee movie, which is more like a mini-series, titled 'When the Levees Broke'. It's FOUR hours long, and on three discs. In a cool box that houses everything. Lee split this awesome program into four acts, and also adds Act V as a special feature which is a 105 minute epilogue. Discs 1 and 3 look new, and are still shiny and clean. Disc 2 has a couple of light scratches on it. Nothing too bad or that will affect play. The outside of the box case has some wear on it. Next up is a special TWO disc edition of something called 'Katrina: South Mississippi's Story', and it's really, really good! Produced by WLOX, a TV station in Biloxi, MS. You'll see on-air announcers broadcasting live until the weather got too bad to continue. You'll hear heroic tales of rescues, and inspiring stories of survival. And they add a second disc of special features, including nine segments about the devastation. Both discs look new and are shiny and clean. Case also looks new. We move on to a film titled 'Trouble the Water', released in 2008. It was nominated for an Oscar in '08 for Best Documentary Feature, and is actually really good. The disc has a couple of very light surface marks on it. Nothing bad or that will affect play. Case looks new. In 2005, and after the storm had passed, the National Geographic company released a DVD called 'Inside Hurricane Katrina'. They donated a portion of the sales of this to the victims of Katrina. It's really interesting, and takes a look at one of the deadliest and costliest hurricanes on record, from a scientific prospective. Disc looks new and is shiny and clean. Case also looks new. Next is a program titled 'Hurricane Katrina: A Storm Chaser's Story', and this one is really interesting. It documents three veteran storm chasers and their harrowing experiences with Katrina. A good bit of their footage has been featured on many shows such as CBS News, Good Morning America, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, and even the Weather Channel (as well as a few more). The disc has a few very light surface marks on it, but nothing bad, or that will affect play. Case looks new. Last disc is actually a Blu-ray, and titled 'Hurricane on the Bayou', which is a documentary narrated by Meryl Streep. It features the music of legendary local musicians such as Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Marva Wright, Tab Benoit, Chubby Carrier, and Amanda Shaw. (Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, and Marva Wright have all passed away since this came out.) Originally an IMAX theater film. Blues guitar mastermind and swamp pop singer Tab Benoit discusses the importance of saving the LA coastal wetlands, and how they help cushion the fury of Gulf hurricanes (but are disappearing at an alarming rate). The disc itself looks new and is shiny and clean. Case looks new. 'People' magazine released a special double issue in September of 2005, and much of it is about Katrina, and the devastation that MS and LA experienced. This issue is still fully intact, with no pages ripped, torn, or dog-eared, and no handwriting anywhere on it. Light wear on the cover. Last item is a 'pictorial record' of Katrina and her wrath, released by MMI Publications. No ads. All pics and stories about this insane natural disaster. In great shape, and looking almost new. No pages ripped or torn, or dog-eared or handwritten on. Many will look upon these pics of the terrible storm called Katrina with shock and bewilderment. New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf coast bounced back after a few years of rebuilding and healing. The MS coast now has world-class casinos, restaurants, and music venues. Houses and businesses were rebuilt and life continued as it had before. New Orleans saw the Saints win their first (and only) Superbowl in 2010, for the 2009 season, just a few years after the city nearly drowned. Mardi Gras and music festivals kept going, as they always had. From TX to FL, all of us that live on the Gulf Coast know that every year, for hurricane season, it's time to prepare, and time to pray. We expect the worse, but look forward to best case scenarios, and we are all relieved when hurricanes fall apart or weaken. It's nature, pure and simple. But we put on our boots and help people that need help when that time comes... Shipping worldwide.
