However, if necessary, they can be started in biodegradable peat pots indoors before the last spring frost. The entire peat pot can then be planted outdoors once the poppy seedlings are established. In growing zones 3 – 7, the Red Corn Poppy, Shirley Poppy – Mixed Colors and the Shirley Poppy – Mixed Double seeds can be planted in late autumn or early spring when a light frost is still possible. In zones 8 – 10, these poppy seeds should be sown in late autumn or winter.WHERE TO PLANT POPPY/HYSSOP SEEDSPoppies only need soil that is ordinary and moist, but well drained. They also do well in full sun.HOW TO PLANT POPPY/HYSSOP SEEDSPoppy seeds need to be cold stratified to germinate. Learn how to cold stratify your seed below.Papaver Rhoeas act as perennials in moderate climates, but they perform as annuals where freezing temperatures and snow occur in winter. These poppies germinate most successfully in cool to moderate temperatures and they are, in fact, frost tolerant. Poppies flower best under cool spring weather conditions. Bloom decreases on poppies as temperatures increase in summer months. The seeds should not be planted deeply; they just need to be compressed into the soil, as they need light to germinate. The best method for planting is to mix one part seed with 5 parts sand and scatter over the prepared growing area.If planting in rows, then plant the seeds 6” to 8” apart.HOW TO CARE FOR POPPIES AND HYSSOPThese varieties of poppy seeds generally germinate in about 20 days. You can thin the seedlings to 6” to 8” apart after they emerge.Poppies should be watered regularly, but they can tolerate dry conditions. It is not necessary to fertilize poppies. It generally takes about 60 to 90 days for poppies to bloom after the seed is planted. This timing depends very much on your growing zone and when you plant, along with Mother Nature’s cooperation. The bloom season for poppies is spring to summer. Poppy plants will bloom for a few weeks, but the length of bloom time can be extended by regular watering and application of mulch for moisture retention, as well as regular deadheading of spent flowers. It is also recommended that the seed be sown in successive plantings to extend the bloom season of the poppies.HOW TO COLD STRATIFY YOUR SEEDSYou can plant in the FALL and let the seeds go through a natural winter. They will be ready to bloom in Spring-Summer.OR you can cold stratify them in the comfort of your home. Most of the materials you need to cold stratify seeds can be found in your home or tool shed.Cold Stratify Seeds: Gather MaterialsCold stratification is an extremely easy process and once you’ve done it once, you’ll no doubt get the hang of it.You can plant in autumn and let the seeds go through a NATURAL winter. They will bloom in spring.ORYou can do it in the comfort of your home:The first step is to gather the materials needed, all of which can be found in your home, tool shed, or with a quick trip to the hardware store.Materials for Cold Stratification:SeedsAn all purpose sand mixture and/or Peat MossPaper TowelsWaterPlastic ziploc bagsA Sharpie or pen for labelingMixing bowlsRefrigerator Cold Stratify Seeds: Step by Step ProcessNow that you have your materials, you can use three different methods for cold stratifying your seeds. All three of these methods work equally well and offer up different ways to basically keep the seeds moist in your refrigerator until it’s time to plant. We’ll go over all three methods:Sand/WaterPlace a 1/4 cup of sand (or more) in a mixing bowl. Slowly add water until you can form a ball with the sand/water mixture.Add your desired seed amount to the sand. Mix thoroughly.Place sand/seed mixture in a ziploc bag and seal.Label the variety and date clearly on the bag.Place in the refrigerator for 1 month before planting. If seedlings start to sprout in the bag in the refrigerator, remove immediately and either plant in the ground or in pots until it’s time to plant outdoors. Peat Moss/WaterThis method is very similar to the sand method, but uses peat moss (which many of us have lying around somewhere).Place a 1/4 cup of peat moss (or more) in a mixing bowl. Slowly add water until you can form a ball with the peat moss/water mixture.Add your desired seed amount to the peat moss. Mix thoroughly.Place peat moss/seed mixture in a ziploc bag and seal.Label the variety and date clearly on the bag.Place in the refrigerator for 1 month before planting. If seedlings start to sprout in the bag in the refrigerator, remove immediately and either plant in the ground or in pots until it’s time to plant outdoors. SOAKThis is one of the methods most widely used for native seeds, especially milkweed. It is easy, quick, and the materials are usually right in your kitchen ready for use.Soak your seeds for 1-2 hours.Use a paper towel or coffee filter to drain the water.Spread seeds out in a single layer on the paper towel.Wrap a dry paper towel around the damp paper towel to help keep things moist but not too wet (which could become moldy).Place in a ziploc bag and seal.Label the variety and date clearly on the bag. COLD STRATIFY SEEDS: PLANTINGThe time you need to keep your seeds in the refrigerator depends on the variety, but 4-5 weeks should be a sufficient amount of time for most seed varieties. Once there’s no more chance of frost in your area, take your seeds out of the fridge and spread seed on bare soil as normal. The simple, quick process of cold stratification helps the seed germinate quicker and grow more readily in your garden bed.WE SHIP FAST &FREE!
