Erastus Wentworth (1813–1886), president of McKendree College, the oldest college in Illinois and the oldest Methodist-affiliated college in the United States. The college was founded in 1828 as Lebanon Seminary; in 1830 it was re-named in honor of Bishop William McKendree (1757–1835), the first American-born Methodist bishop, who donated 480 acres of land to the school. This copy with an 1850 presentation inscription by Erastus Wentworth, the year he joined the faculty of natural philosophy and chemistry at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania.
