INCREDIBLE MAKER MARKED 18TH CENTURY LION HEAD POMELL HUNTING SHORT SWORD / CUTTOE Ca.1720 Click images to enlarge Description Up for Consideration is a Incredible European 18th Century Lion Head Pommel Hunting Short Sword / Cuttoe circa 1720 c1720's-1750 This rare and beautiful German or English hunting sword dates from around 1720-1750. Although originally intended as hunting swords, called in France “Couteau de Chasse,” these swords were also adopted as side arms by seafarers. William Gilkerson in his book “Boarders Away: With steel – Edged Weapons and Polearms” documents their regular use by Royal Navy officers. The use of the name “Cuttoe” to describe these weapons is a bastardisation of their French name by English sailors. This is probably the most ornate Hunting sword we have ever encountered. Even the Philadelphia Museum has nothing this ornate. The hilt has a profusion of images and imagery. Simply Incredible repoussé scenes of Boar and Buck hunting with dogs and Spear on either side of the grip leading up to the beautiful repousse Lion Head Pommel with great details and flowing mane. The Cross guard, grip and knuckle bow are detailed with a lying dog and a monster head while the hand guard is amazingly detailed in raised repousse relief of a pack of hunting dogs taking down a large Stag. Please note all images as there isn't enough to say about the wonderful piece of 18th century art this sword is. A truly beautiful one of a king Hunting Short Sword/Hanger. The entire sword measures 25 inches in length. The Hilt measures 4.75 inches. The 19-inch double edged blade has multiple engraved “Picto” hallmarks on either side. The edges remain sharp. The blade is in very good condition for its 300 years of age with some slight edge ware and nicks from use. The gilt brass hilt, shell and D-guard are in excellent condition and the blade is firm in the hilt but there is slight movement on the D-guard handle and attached hand guard being one piece. This is a beautiful and rare early-18th Century hunting sword in well above average condition. A Beautiful choice example which had previously been on display in a Private Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts.
