Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE INTRODUCTION On November 22, 1986, at approximately 8:40 a.m., those persons on the INSIDE of the Harkers Island United Methodist Church experienced one of those "rare moments" that comes unexpected and unplanned, but leaves its imprint forever on the mind and heart. So it was on that beautiful autumn morning, as we stood together in our checked aprons, we began to realize what hard work, courage, under- standing, love, and true fellowship really meant. After nine long months of constant work and un- ending deadlines, the day of our Island Country Christmas Bazaar had arrived. At that moment, we did not know of the "multitude" that waited outside. It did not matter! The worrying was over. As we stood and looked at each other, and then at all those things around us that our hearts and hands TOGETHER had made, we knew we had done our best, and God had blessed us. Regardless of what the day's outcome would be, we knew that what we had done was truly special. The day went to be on even more successful than we had ever imagined. People came from far and wide, many too late to even see all that had been accomplished. Yet, even with the long lines, the crowded conditions, and the short supplies, all those that came had only smiles and kind words. The entire day was a reflection of the "special fellowship" that had taken place before the doors had opened. Since that experience, our women's group has not been the same. From that bazaar, we learned that we are a very "special people" with a host of talents; all we needed was the courage use them. to Through this we have somehow begun to expect more of ourselves, and in so doing, have grown and strengthened in our desire to do our best. We have seen that we CAN accomplish most any task we set-out to accomplish, as long as we are willing to keep all things in perspective, the right priorities, and maintain willing to really work. Now with these new-found realizations, have pursued this cookbook project ... we Our objective with this endeavor was not to make a profit, or to just "have-something-to-do", but to fill a very real need of our home community. We knew that it would take hours of hard work and an earnest desire to produce a book that would successfully reflect the real spirit of the people of Harkers Island. This would be no easy task. In fact, with all that has been said and written about Harkers Island, the people of this Island had never told their own story. Over the past twenty years we have watched "our little Island" turn from an isolated rural community, into a rapidly growing retirement and vacation resort. The "Harkers Island" that we grew up with has begun to disappear with the changes taking place. We realize that many of these changes have brought opportunities to the people of the Island, and for that we are grateful. Yet, we have paid, and are paying, a price. We cannot help but begin to savor and cherish the vanishing closeness and seclusion we once shared. So, that is what this book is all about. It is our attempt to tell the people who come and look that there is more to this Island than a weekend retreat or a Sunday afternoon drive This is our home. It is a "special place a special people" ... Our character has for been shaped by the fact that our forefathers could not rely on anything but their own hands and minds to meet the needs of their families. They were forced, by sheer geography, to be self- reliant, inventive, tolerant, and most of all, determined, to survive. From these accomplishments, they and now we have grown to be proud of the lifestyle that was established. This book is for our children too, that they might begin to realize as they grow older that "being from Harkers Island" is indeed a privilege. To have a heritage as rich as ours is truly a precious gift. We hope that through the pages of this book, we can somehow capture some of the stories of yesterday, so that they can tell them to their children, and their children's children. Unless we can find someway to hold on to these treasures, they will surely be lost. And, this "labor of love" is for our grand- mothers and grandfathers, aunts and uncles, who sat on porches in weathered swings, and told us about how they brought their home from the Banks; and how they used to ride the mailboat to Beaufort on Saturday if there was any money that week; and how the only things they received for Christmas were an apple and an orange in an old sock they had hung on a door facing; and how happy they had been. It is for them who taught us to love our homeplace, and showed us through their lives, how to appreciate and protect its beauty... This is our thanks to them. This book is for all of us young and old, native and newcomer. Story It is Harkers But only a portion of it. only "scratched-the-surface". Island's We have We have realized that the more we talked, the more we needed to say, and the more we learned, the more we needed to know ... So, please understand that we have collected all that time, and space, would allow. Yet, even with all that we have recorded it is only a glimpse of the things we as a community hold most dear. Our sincere hope is that this book will encourage you within your as natives, to stop and listen to those own families and neighborhoods, and begin to really hear their stories. Then to find someway to preserve and protect their words. It is a privilege to have them share with you. Don't let it get away ...
