ITALY Pozzuoli - 1860s Antique Print Engraving

Description: INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:? The shipping rates shown are for '1st Class International Package' with tracking.? Ebay is also promoting their EIS International Shipping program on sellers pages. I do not use this program because it is more expensive, slower, not very transparent, and frustrating to the buyer, if something goes wrong. Do not select it, if ebay does show it as an option. Original Narrative: Pozzuolo (The Ancient Puteoli) - Italy, Landing Place of St. Paul: A LITTLE peninsula in the centre of the sweeping shore of the Bay of Naples is crowned with the town and ruins of Pozzuolo so famous in the annals of imperial Rome, so much admired by their conquerors, and so associated with the perilous travels of the Apostle of the Gentiles. In early ages, Dicearchia, so called from its founder Diceus, was the chief mart of the inhabitants of Cumae, who here established an arsenal and dockyard, which the Romans took the pains to enlarge and maintain, and Puteoli, its later appellation, became the rendezvous of Grecian and Sicilian merchants, and attained to so much consequence as to be entitled " Little Rome." There cannot be a spot in Italy, great Rome excepted, consecrated by a larger amount of classic associations than this now desolate and forlorn rock: hither all the wealthy citizens of the mistress-city flocked to luxuriate, on pretence of making use of its salubrious baths: here Cicero had avilla called Academia: on the road to this venerated spot is seen the tomb of Virgil, which the piety of Silius Italicus has pointed out to posterity by a feeling inscription: from Pozzuolo, the house in which Tasso dwelt, and the terrace where he walked while meditating on those sublime works which are possibly superior to his great original, may be distinctly viewed: and it was at the ruined arches of Puteoli that St. Paul disembarked on his way to the palace of Caesar. Around the town is a splendid enclosure consisting of the Monte Nuovo, the Leucogean, Olibanian, and Gaurian hills; and in the calm port beneath, ships and galleys are always seen at anchor. South of the accustomed roadstead may still be seen the piers or pillars of a bridge or causeway, ascribed to the emperor Caligula, and from the extremity of which, that madman is said to have continued a pontoon bridge, that he might be enabled to say "he rode on horseback across the water from one city to the other." Some historians contend that stone piers were actually erected at intervals during the whole distance, upwards of half a mile, upon which a floor was laid; but the supposition that a communication was formed by a bridge of boats from the extremity of the mole, the ruins of which remain, is the more probable.
