JACK DEMPSEY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 10/05/1932 - HFSID 41586 JACK DEMPSEY Jack Dempsey writes a letter of apology for not making the lunch date as promised. Typed Letter Signed: "Jack Dempsey", 1p, 5¼x6¾ attached to paper of the same size. On his personal stationery, Adelphia Hotel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1932 October 5. To Mr. Carl Thorp, Newport, Rhode Island. In full: "It appears that another apology is due you. I was so very busy while in New York getting my new act whipped into shape, training, etc., that it is quite possible that my appointments got more than a bit mixed. If that is the case, I can only repeat that I am really sorry. I am going back to New York the last of this week for a couple of days, and then expect to on the road [sic]. If I play a theater in the vincinity [sic] of Newport will be very glad [sic] to get in touch with you and keep the long postponed luncheon engagement. Sincerely". Billed as the "Manassa Mauler" and the "toughest man ever to come out of the West," the 6-foot, 190-pound Dempsey met the 6-foot-6, 250-pound heavyweight champion Jess Willard on July 4, 1919, at Toledo, OH. Dempsey won on a 3rd-round knockout. During the next seven years, Dempsey defended his title only six times but made a lot of money in the process. His fight against Frenchman Georges Carpentier on July 2, 1921 produced boxing's first $1 million gate. He lost his title to Gene Tunney on September 23, 1926 in a ten-round decision after which he retired. Named the greatest fighter of the half-century in a 1950 Associated Press poll, he won 60 professional fights, 49 by knockout; lost 7, 1 by knockout; and fought 7 draws, 5 no-decisions, and 1 no-contest. Lightly soiled. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: JACK DEMPSEY See more listings in our SPORTS (2,230) category.
