Description: Presumed first edition of "Jack in the Pulpit," which as explained in the facsimile letter from Whittier, is a heavily edited version of a manuscript he received from Miss Smith of Medford, MA. Illustrated with chromolithographs. A couple interesting things about this copy. The date of the inscription (1880) is four years before the copyright date (1884). There was also a hand-written note enclosed in the book. The letter contains the same text as the letter from Whittier printed as the frontispiece, but with edits. The letter is not signed. Is this Whittier's original draft of the letter? Or just someone copying the letter for some reason (with errors) then editing? There do seem to be some similarities in the writing, but I'm not a hand-writing expert and definitely not identical. In good shape overall. Bumping/rubbing of corners and a little bit on the edges of boards. Appears to have been a sticker on the spine that has left a faint mark behind. Binding feels good. Some separation at very bottom of first pages. Rear hinge may be starting to crack. Inscription on flyleaf. Interior in very good condition. Includes hand-written note. See photos.
