SEDDON - AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT SIGNED 02/23/1863 - HFSID 293051 JAMES SEDDON During the lull between the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, the Confederate Secretary of War authorizes an issue of cloth to an officer in Lee's Army. Autograph Document signed: "J. A. Seddon" as Confederate Secretary of War, 1 page, 3½x8 affixed to 8½x4½ paper. No place, 1863 February 23. "To the Q. M, General, in full: "Will Lt. Col. Smith (now nominable for Brigadier) have a sufficient quantity of cloth of the kind to be distributed among the armies for the clothing of the officers to furnish him a suit and let it be deducted from the quantity to be sent to Gen'. Lee's army to which Col. S. belongs". Mounted on blank page from a Confederate Quartermaster General's requisition book. Representing Virginia, James Alexander Seddon (1815-1880) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1845-1847 and 1849-1851. He was a member of the Peace Convention held in Washington, D.C., in February 1861, in an effort to prevent the impending American Civil War. Seddon was a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress (1861-1862) before being appointed Secretary of War by Confederate President Jefferson Davis (1862-1865). Seddon was among the Confederate officials charged with mistreatment of Union prisoners. He was imprisoned for six months, but pardoned by President Johnson. Heavily toned and creased.
