(London), 2 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches tall full leather bound, boards framed by gilt ruling and design, gilt decorations and gilt-lettered burgundy leather label to spine, gilt dots to all board edges, all page edges gilt, marbled endpapers, [4], 188 pp. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with wear along both external joints and a 3/4" crack to the top of the rear joint, though the binding is quite solid. Otherwise, apart from a trace of foxing, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked. A series of four poems written by the Scottish author James Thomson (1700-1748). The first part, Winter, was published in 1726, and the completed poem cycle appeared in 1730. The poem was extremely influential, and stimulated works by Joshua Reynolds, John Christopher Smith, Joseph Haydn, Thomas Gainsborough and J. M. W. Turner. In this 1783 London imprint, the poem is prefaced by 'Ode on the death of Mr. Thomson' by Mr. Collins. Thomson is one of the sixteen Scottish poets and writers appearing on the Scott Monument on Princes Street in Edinburgh. He appears on the right side of the east face. He has a large memorial in Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner, next to William Shakespeare and underneath Thomson's countryman, Robert Burns.
