Acoustic-Music Live !!!!!Old & In The Way..... What a Band ! The " definition " of Tight ! Wow. One of the best-ever, no doubt. Well, as a die-hard fan for " Real " Music, and " Real " Musicianship ... I am very proud to say that I was fortunate enough to see every member of this fantastic American Band play live, but not all at the same-time unfortunately -- as there are very few that did -- and those of you who did should count your lucky-stars !!! Jerry Garcia on Banjo ! & Vocals - David Grisman on Mandolin & Vocals - Peter Rowan on Guitar & Vocals - Vasser Clements on Fiddle - and John Kahn on Acoustic Bass. Here in 2015 only two members still remain, but the spirit of all five men lives on ( and then some ! ) on this absolutely-unbelievable 1973 " Live " CD. This Amazing ! release came out on David Grisman's " Acoustic Disc " label ( ACD-28 ) way-back in 1997, and it was beyond a ground breaker - to Acoustic Music Fans !!! And ... this release here - best known as " Breakdown " is actually titled as " Original Live Recordings from 1973 - Vol. II " ... as it was indeed the follow-up release to Vol. I -- best known as " That High Lonesome Sound ! ". Both releases are taken from the October '73 Live performances at the Boarding House in San Francisco ! So ... as it goes without saying - Yes ! ... you must-have both of these Legendary ! O & ITW Mid-'90's releases ! So, here indeed ... is Volume II -- Breakdown !!! As, before these Magical ! ' Live ' releases - for the most part, Old & In The Way Fans really had to rely on usually raspy old analog cassette tapes, and the occasional raspy vinyl too. There were some good ones - no doubt, as a few of my cassettes I practically wore out over the years ... but basically, many fans relied solely on their Old & In The Way Album ( " The " one & only Old & In The Way Album ( recorded in '73 & ( finally !?! ) released in '75 ! ) to get their O & ITW fix on !?! And, as great as this band was - from head to toe ! ... that ' need ' for this fix comes early & often ! - to many-many Acoustic Music Fans !! So finally ... in '96, and then in '97 - these were released - and felt almost like a Savior ! Seriously ... It is recorded by Vicki Babcock & Owsley Stanley ( Bear ! ), and this unit is all-over these Shows ( parts from both 10/1/73 & 10/8/73 ) - and they are downright Tight & Hot ! Well, then again - this is them in their " Prime " - and sadly, their one & only prime - as this Band played their Last Show Ever ! a month later on 11/4 /73 in Cotati, CA at Sonoma State University - after only about 25 shows all throughout the entire year of 1973. And after this, everybody in the Band had pretty much moved on from this side project, and I suppose the main " end " was due to the fact that Garcia & Kahn were back full-force & touring in the Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders Band, which eventually evolved / changed into the Jerry Garcia Band and everyone was able to enjoy in one form or another all the way from 1975 through 1995. This release - just like the original & only Old & In The Way Album has " IT " , and there is really no other way to put " It " into words - other then to listen. Wow !!!!! These Boys are Lightning-tight !, the song-writing is deep, and the instrumental attack-zone is spot-on & blistering hot - not even to say that the synergy between band members is about at true peak-perfection. Enjoy !!! As it is almost humanly impossible not to - at least to my ears ... My recommendation is to pick up this one, and " That High Lonesome Sound " too - so you can check this necessary musical life-accomplishment off of your list ! And ... if you don't already have the 1975 Old & In The Way release ?? Whoa !?? ... well then What ? are you waiting for ?? Go and treat those ears, and I assure you that it is well-worth the effort. All of this Old & In The Way material has been an inspiring ' staple ' for me in my lifetime - as it is just that big, and these guys ... they are Just ! That-Good !!! ... Enjoy !!!!!
