PS2024.0418 32 pages. 4 5/8 x 8 3/4 inches This little book was a brochure produced to accompany an exhibition devoted to the publication of Joan Miró's illustrated edition of A Toute Épreuve by Paul Eluard (Geneva: Gérald Cramer). The exhibit was held at the Galerie Berggruen in Paris, and the gallery published this work, part of a series devoted to artists of the 20th century. The quality of the production is such that this is a work of art in its own right. A Toute Épreuve is one of the finest artist's books of the twentieth century and the most ambitious creation of renowned Surrealist Joan Miró (1893-1983). For over ten years, Miró, the Spanish artist, and Paul Eluard (1895-1952), whose text was inspired by Catalan Spain, worked together to create a unique book that they called a masterpiece of "plastic harmony." Printed in pure, dazzling colors, Miró's characteristic amorphous forms invite the viewer to skip from text to imagery almost interchangeably, giving marvelous new life and meaning to Eluard's poetry as well as creating a book that is in itself a sculptural entity. Its title, roughly translatable as "Ready for Anything," A Toute Épreuve achieves Miró's own ambition for the project, stated in 1948: "I hope to create something sensational." Printed in April 1958. Typography by the presses of L'Imprimerie Union, Paris; phototype and stencils executed by the studios of Daniel Jacomet. Please see photos. More photos available upon request.
