MORE INFO: FROM THE MUSIC LIBRARY OF A NATIONAL RADIO NETWORK. ARTIST BIO:Jean-Philippe Smet, 15 June 1943, Paris, France. After his Belgian father’s desertion, Smet was adopted by his aunt Helene Mar, wife of North American song-and-dance man Lee Hallyday, from whom the child later derived his stage surname. His aptitude for the performing arts earned him a role in his uncle’s act, and he developed a passable mastery of the guitar after giving up violin lessons. By the late 50s, he had become an incorrigible ye-ye - a Parisian species of rock ‘n’ roller that trod warily amid official disapproval. His stamping ground was Le Golf Drouot club with its jukebox of US discs. Singing in public was second nature to him, and he sounded so much like the genuine American article during his 1960 radio debut that, via the brother who managed him, Vogue contracted Hallyday for an immediate single, ‘T’Ai Mer Follement’. However, it was a million-selling bilingual cover of Chubby Checker’s ‘Let’s Twist Again’ on Philips in 1961, a film part (in Les Parisiennes) that same year, and, crucially, the intensity of his recitals that convinced most that this svelte, blond youth was to France what Elvis Presley was to the USA. The title of 1962’s Johnny Hallyday Sings America’s Rockin’ Hits was a reliable indicator of future direction. The preponderance of English language material in his concert sets was commensurate with recorded interpretations of songs such as ‘The House Of The Rising Sun’, ‘Black Is Black’, ‘In The Midnight Hour’, ‘Hey Joe’ and in the 70s and 80s’ ‘Delta Lady’ and - in a remarkable 1985 duet with Emmylou Harris - ‘If I Were A Carpenter’. An appearance in 1964 on Ready, Steady, Go! had been well received but he was unable to duplicate even Richard Anthony’s modest triumphs in the UK chart. If neither made much headway in the USA, Johnny eclipsed his rival in Africa and South America, where a 25, 000 attendance at a Hallyday show in Argentina was not atypical. Several degrees from blatant bandwagon-jumping, Hallyday continued to thrive on a certain hip sensibility, manifested in his block-bookings of fashionable studios in Britain and the USA, and employment of top session musicians like Bobby Keyes, Jim Price and Gary Wright - all prominent on Flagrant Delit which, like most of his albums, contained a few Hallyday originals. Details of his stormy marriage to Sylvie Vartan and a more recent hip operation attracted headlines as he entered middle age. Yet Hallyday maintained a jocular bonhomie in interview, and on stage he remained as melodramatic as ever, evolving less as France’s Presley, more its ‘answer’ to Cliff Richard, as he is still one of the few European stars in direct artistic debt to US pop to be regarded with anything approaching strong interest beyond his country’s borders. Dozens of albums have been released, but mainly in France and Canada, and an extraordinary box set containing 42 CDs was issued for his 50th birthday. In 1997, he provoked outrage in his home country when he admitted to taking cocaine ‘morning, noon and night.’ In 2003, he was still a phenomenon, selling over a million copies of his album A La Vie, A La Mort together with a series of sell out concerts for his much anticipated 60th birthday. In 2006, Hallyday signed with the French branch of Warner Music after being with Universal and allied companies for over 40 years.
