Description: A signed (to a loose publisher bookplate) 1st printing PBO of this 2021 novel from multi-award winning Norwegian author, poet and playwright Jon Fosse; this is the concluding part of his 'Septology' series. It was shortlisted for the 2022 Booker International Prize; the first part of the series 'The Other Name ' was longlisted for the 2020 Prize. ** After years of being mentioned as a strong candidate, on 5 October 2023, Mr Fosse was named as the Winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize for Literature. He is the 4th Norwegian to have won the prize but the first for almost a century, since Sigrid Undset won in 1928. ** 'A New Name : Septology VI-VII ', published on 8 September 2021 by Fitzcarraldo Editions, London, 1st edition / 1st printing, medium modern paperback original, 228 pages + copyright page at rear. Translated from the Norwegian by Damion Searls. Hand signed by Jon Fosse to a loose publisher bookplate. In very fine unread condition, paperback original in the usual blue french flaps with white lettering that is standard for the 1st printings of all fiction titles released by this publisher. Very light rubbing to edges and corners, publisher/retailer ISBN sticker to rear wrapper. ** Any signed 1st printings of Mr Fosse's works are very uncommon and are almost always to a publisher bookplate. They are now highly collectable since his prestigious Nobel Prize win. It is incredibly rare to find any example signed by him to, say, the title page ** Asle is an ageing painter and widower who lives alone on the southwest coast of Norway. His only friends are his neighbour, Åsleik, a traditional fisherman-farmer, and Beyer, a gallerist who lives in the city. There, in Bjørgvin, lives another Asle, also a painter but lonely and consumed by alcohol. Asle and Asle are doppelgängers – two versions of the same person, two versions of the same life, both grappling with existential questions. In this final instalment of Jon Fosse’s Septology, the major prose work by ‘the Beckett of the twenty-first century’ (Le Monde), Christmas is approaching. Tradition has it that Åsleik and Asle eat lutefisk together, but this year Asle has agreed for the first time to celebrate Christmas with Åsleik and his sister, Guro. On Christmas Eve, Åsleik, Asle, and the dog Bragi take Åsleik’s boat out on the Sygnefjord. Meanwhile, we follow the lives of the two Asles as younger adults in flashbacks: the narrator meets his lifelong love, Ales; joins the Catholic Church; starts exhibiting with Beyer; and can make a living by trying to paint away all the pictures stuck in his mind. After a while, Asle and Ales leave the city and move to the house in Dylgja. The other Asle gets married too, but his wedding ends with a sobbing bride and is followed soon after by a painful breakup. Written in melodious and hypnotic ‘slow prose’, A New Name: Septology VI-VII is a transcendent exploration of the human condition by Jon Fosse, and a radically other reading experience – incantatory, hypnotic, and utterly unique.
