Description: circular-shaped bombe design, depicting the Cancer crab symbol in relief, designed by Joseff of Hollywood. Signed "Joseff."Worn by Terry Moore in the episode of the television series Batman (Twentieth Century Fox Television, 1966-1968) titled "The Zodiac Crimes" (Season 2, Episode 37).About The Joseff ArchivesEugene Joseff (1905-1948) departed the midwest of the U.S. as his career in the advertising business in the late 1920's. Hoping to find better economic opportunities he headed to Southern California and relocated to Los Angeles where the Hollywood film industry was booming.Young and charismatic Joseff met the legendary motion picture costume designer Walter Plunkett (1902-1982) who encouraged Joseff to create custom jewelry for films. Joseff had experience working as an apprentice at a foundry at a young age and so understood working with precious metals and began experimenting with handcrafting pieces of jewelry at home in the garage of his residence located on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. The ambitious designer amassed a massive reference library depicting historic jewelry designs from around the globe which assisted him in creating his own pieces. He also became a leading entertainment industry expert on jewelry and freely allowed Hollywood's golden age costume designers direct access to his invaluable research, where they could read through and examine his impressive vintage book collection, antique prints and museum quality reference photographs etc. for various productions. Which only increased the size of Joseff's established network of industry contacts.Unique to Joseff's designs was the fact that each piece of custom jewelry was developed using a special matte metal finish applied in order to minimize lighting glare from powerful studio lights used during filming on soundstages of Hollywood backlots. Which rapidly contributed to the artisan becoming known as "The premiere costume jewelry designer in the film industry."Under the name "Joseff of Hollywood" the jewelry maker designed, manufactured and rented (which is how much of his famed archive was identified, accumulated and preserved) to all of the studio majors. Joseff created elegant and exquisite pieces for such famous actresses and classic films, as Marlene Dietrich for Shanghai Express, Greta Garbo for Camille and Vivien Leigh for Gone With The Wind among countless others.Over the decades the Joseff Archives built a significant collection of screen-used motion picture jewelry, including work by other designers, at first for studio rentals and then eventually pulling these historic pieces and preserving them for posterity, meticulously documenting each piece of jewlery's lineage.Following the passing of its original founder, Joseff of Hollywood moved into the retail sector under the guidance of Joseff's business partner and wife Joan Castle (1912-2010) and continues to operate to this day, and is managed by members of the Joseff family.2.25 inchesPROVENANCE From The Joseff ArchivesHollywood
