Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air (1774-86) is a six-volume work published by 18th-century British polymath Joseph Priestley, which reports a series of his experiments on "airs" or gases, most notably his discovery of the oxygen gas, which he called "dephlogisticated air".This is the first volume of the Second Edition. It appears to be a variant of the 1775 printing (Crook 454) in that it conforms to all description points of that printing with the exception that the dedication is to the Earl of Shelburne (as with the 1774 printing), not the Earl of Stanhope. Regardless, all volumes of the work are uncommon and sought after.This copy is very good in full calf with gilt on the spine. It lacks the errata leaf and the gilt title Lettering-piece on the spine. There is some light marginal spotting and staining.The inner hinges and outer joints are beginning to split, but the binding is stil sound.Provenance: J. Fleming, Coll.
