The sloop was rebuilt in Fairhaven, Massachusetts by Captain Joshua Slocum, one of the most legendary of all the great American sea captains. On June 27, 1898, Captain Slocum sailed the 37' "Spray" into the harbor at Newport, Rhode Island, after completing the feat of becoming the first man to sail around the world alone. His story was chronicled in his classic "Sailing Alone Around the World." The National Bank of Fairhaven in honor of their 150th anniversary, commissioned this nautical cup plate and the dates 1831-1981 are featured within the design. This limited edition pressing of the cup plate only had 1,000 produced with anchors. Handcrafted on Cape Cod using time-honored techniques, these 3.5 inch cup plates have subtle variations that highlight the artisan's skill. Each cup plate is crafted using a mold created with a hammer and chisel, and then pressed with molten glass using an antique press. This manufacturing process results in cup plates that are similar yet possess their own distinctive characteristics. Look closely and you'll find the artisan's initials and the Pairpoint trademark within the design.
