During the second half of the nineteenth century, mesmerism played an important role in British psychic research. The Society recruited many scientists, including Edmund Gurney, F.W.H. Myers and other investigators of physical phenomena such as psychokinesis, telepathy and clairvoyance. The Journal was published from 1882 until 1961, and the first editor-in-chief was Henry Sidgwick, a former fellow and proctor at Trinity College, Cambridge and member of the Metaphysical Society, who had an interest in psychical research.
