Description: PLEASE READ SHIPPING DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE BUYING! To learn more about us please click on our profile This oil on canvas painting, recently found in a provincial French auction house, is probably a relatively large (56x74 cm) preparatory study for the finished monumental painting, which we have sold in 1998 through the Vienna "Dorotheum" (see our image). The author of latter, famous 19th century Hungarian painter Karoly Marko (also called Marko the Elder) painted it in 1857, presumably in his then permanent residence Villa Appeggi near Florence. The supposition, that our painting is a preparatory study for the finished version, sold at "Dorotheum", is convincingly supported by comparisons with other similar studies by this artist (see our images). Nevertheless in absence of a written expertise on the part of Hungarian art historians we don't provide 100% guarantee of authenticity. Karoly (Carl) Marko the Elder was born in Loecse (Leutschau) in 1791. At first an engineer, he then began studying painting autodidactically in Budapest. From 1822 he was active in Vienna as portrait and miniature painter. In 1830-1832 the artist lived in Kismaraton, Hungary, and in 1832 moved to Rome and in 1838 to Pisa. He spent the years 1840-1847 in Florence before settling down in Villa Appeggi which belonged to his friend Count Cherardesca near Florence, where the artist died in 1860. Carl Marko is considered the best Hungarian romantical painter of the first half of the 19th century. His works are displayed in various great museums worldwide: National Gallery Budapest, Austrian Gallery in Vienna, museums of Florence, Arezzo, Dresden, Genoa, Graz, Innsbruck, Karlsruhe, Copenhagen, Munich, Prague, etc. His son, Karoly Marko the younger (1822-1891) was also a renowned artist, working in manner of his father. Works of Karoly Marko the Elder achieve very high prices at the current art auction market (see our images) Provenance: Auction house "Dufreche", Besançon/France, 25 October 2012, lot 67 Condition: good; lined Creation Year: 1850s Measurements: UNFRAMED: 56.5 cm x 74.5 cm / 22.2" x 29.3" inches FRAMED: 78.1 cm x 95.6 cm / 30.7" x 37.6" inches Object Type: Framed oil painting Style: 19th century paintings Technique: oil on canvas Creator: Karoly (Carl) Marko the Elder Creator Dates: 1791 Loecse-1860 Florence Nationality: Austro-Hungarian Themes: HUNGARIAN ITALIAN RELIGIOUS BIBLICAL HARVEST WORKING PEASANT ALPINE SHIPPING: Professional packaging and fully insured expedited service (TNT/FedEx/UPS) within 2-5 business days.
