The Katanga Cross, also known as a handa, was a copper ingot shaped like an equal-armed cross that served as a currency in certain regions of the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during the 19th and early 20th centuries. These ingots, typically around 20 centimeters (7.9 inches) in size and weighing approximately 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds), were crafted by local coppersmiths through the process of pouring molten copper into sand molds. The name "Katanga Cross" originates from Katanga, a prosperous copper mining region located in the southeastern part of the DRC. At the time it was in circulation, a Katanga Cross held the value of about 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of flour, five or six fowls, or six axes. Ten crosses could be exchanged for a gun. In more recent history, during the year 1960, Katanga unilaterally declared its secession from the newly independent Congo-Léopoldville and established itself as the State of Katanga. The cross was adopted as a national symbol by the Katanga state, with three red Katanga crosses displayed in the lower hoist section of its flag. Furthermore, coins minted by Katanga in 1961 featured the image of the Katanga Cross. However, in 1963, the State of Katanga was forcibly reunited with the rest of the Congo. **130738** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2023 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
