He opened his Southern California studio in 1947 when he began photographing bodybuilders in the Los Angeles area and sold them through mail order and gay bookstores. In 1956, Bellas studio moved to Kensington Road in Los Angeles and launched his own magazine, The Male Figure. Among physique photographers, Bellas' work was noted for having a distinctly campy, tongue-in-cheek sensibility. Bellas was known to travel around the country, discovering new models to photograph. He is considered by many to be among the most important gay photographers of the physique era.
