ProvenanceWalter Wisznia (1924-2004) and Sonja Wisznia (1927-2015) Walter Wisznia, one of Corpus Christi's most notable 20th century modern Architects, died on March 12, 2004 at the age of 79. Mr. Wisznia was born in Vienna, Austria on May 12, 1924. He schooled in France and England before immigrating to the U.S. In 1948, Walter Wisznia graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Architecture. That same year he began practicing in Corpus Christi, Texas and continued until his death. Although initially he focused on single family residences, it was his contribution to the skyline of Corpus Christi for which he is most noted: the Executive House Condominiums, Nueces County Courthouse, Wells Fargo Tower, Towers II & III and Driscoll Foundation Children's Hospital are but a small part of his portfolio of work. Additionally, he designed over 70 banks and office buildings throughout Texas and New Mexico and completed projects in Oklahoma and Louisiana.A prolific modernist, Walter produced approximately 500 designs throughout his career and partnerships. Water Wisznia defined and redefined Texas modernism for generations. Sonja WiszniaSonja Wisznia was born on March 9, 1927 to Harry and Elise Postrong in Frankfort, Germany. She was married to her husband Walter Wisznia for 56 years.Sonja Wisznia was born in Frankfurt Germany, lived her teen years in New York City, and moved to Corpus Christi in the late 1940s when she married Walter Wisznia. Together they forged a wonderful life raising 3 children, working hard and traveling the world. On their honeymoon, they were introduced to Picasso at a Parisian restaurant. The staff found cardboard from the kitchen and the artist gifted the couple with a sketch. Travel is what Sonja loved to do, and to emphasize that, she opened a travel agency in the 1980s. Sonja and Walter lived in their Ocean Drive home together from 1973 to each of their deaths. Each piece of furniture and art was handpicked by both, as their eye for beauty was unsurpassed. Although Walter Wisznia received much of the attention for his design work, Sonja lived the saying “behind every successful man is an equally great woman”.
