Description: Large Joe Gropper Framed Oil Painting on Masonite Nude Woman - Listed Artist Boston Roxbury Massachusetts. Wood frame measures 24 5/8" x 36 5/8" and artwork is 23" x 35". Back side shows markings on the Masonite panel interesting provenance. Good condition , surface has a few scuff marks when I hold it up to reflected light but no noteworthy damage, original frame is solid & sturdy. Frame was probably made by the artist. The backing has name Christensen and likely refers to another Boston artist Ronald Julius Christensen who was a friend of Gropper and painted in a very similar style. Joe Gropper (1925 - 1999) was active/lived in Massachusetts. Joe Gropper is known for Easel painting, caricatures, trompe l'oeil.Joseph Gropper was born in 1925 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He attended the Massachusetts College of Art then graduated with honors from the Boston Museum School. Oskar Kokoschka was his mentor and influenced his artwork. Gropper later went on to Tufts and earned a degree in education and thereafter taught art and art history for a year in the Boston school system.In 1955, he opened a gallery beneath the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square and in 1966 he moved to a new location. While Joe Gropper made his name as an art dealer for over 30 years, he continued to paint and later even acted in various productions. During the rest of his life, he did some watercolors, oil paintings, and caricatures when possible, but it wasn't until 1994, five years before his death in 1999, that he did his final trompe l'oeil painting.Joe Gropper and the artist, William Gropper were cousins.The Gropper Art Gallery of Cambridge, Massachusetts was established by Joseph Gropper in 1954 and specialized in prints.
