Description: Edouard Righetti (1924-2001) is a well listed French painter, printmaker and designer. Edouard came from a family noted for the art of fresco painting as his father and maternal grandfather painted frescoes together. As a child, he showed interest and talent in painting still lives and portraits and he showed remarkable ability in his use of color. He received his art education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier. The artist was quickly affiliated with the "figurative trends" school and his early works earned the praise of many established artists including Maurice Utrillo. In the 50's, he learned to make etchings and engravings and gained recognition as both a painter and an engraver. In his paintings, watercolors and gouaches, he favors simplicity and color. He often used his engraving skills in creating medals for the Paris Mint. His works can be found in many important collections including the Department of Prints and Photography of the National Library of France in Paris and in the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris. The artwork for sale is an original watercolor on matte paper. It is signed at the lower right "Ed Righetti" (photo 2) and it is also signed and dated in pencil on the back "Ed Righetti '65" (photo 4). The painting measures 15" high and 21" across. The image is a depiction of a large ship at the dock and shows the stationary crane for unloading cargo and the crew of dockworkers standing by. Primary colors include white, gray, blue (the skies), the crane of blue and the hooks of red, the ship of black, white, red and green, the green and gray waters and the workers in colorful shirts of yellow, red, blue and orange. This is a beautifully rendered dockside scene of workers unloading cargo. There is a crease in the paper right below the artist's signature (photo 11) that will flatten and disappear under a mat and glass.
