This is a high quality print, unframed, approximately 7.5x10" on 8.5x11" archival fine art paper, suitable for matting, framing and display. Léon Gimpel (1873 – 1948) was a French photographer. He was the youngest son of four, born to a Jewish Alsacian family who fled to Paris after Germany took over Alsace in 1870. In 1897 his interest in photography was kindled when he acquired a Kodak detective camera, soon swapped for a Spido Gaumont which allowed him greater creative freedom. By 1900 he was working prodigiously, documenting the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. By 1904 his work was being published regularly in the magazines La Vie au Grand Air, La Vie Illustrée and L'Illustration. However it is his pioneering work in colour photography that he is most notable for. Gimpel met Auguste and Louis Lumière, who had just displayed their invention, the autochrome, to the Académie des Sciences. Limited by the long exposure time required, Gimpel used the process, to photograph still lifes and landscapes. Gimpel then modified the autochrome plates to produce "instant" color pictures. Thanks to his works Gimpel was the only photographer who succeeded in capturing, in colour, scenes of everyday life during la Belle Époque. As well he was one of a group of photographers who documented WW1 in color. The Autochrome Lumière is an early color photography process. Patented in 1903 by the Lumière brothers in France and first marketed in 1907, it was the principal color photography process in use before the advent of subtractive color film in the mid-1930s.
