Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below) ........ This is a rare broadside (single page playbill) from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the ALAN JAY LERNER and FREDERICK LOEWE musical "PAINT YOUR WAGON" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open November 12th, 1951 at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre in New York City and run for 289 performances.) ..... The musical starred JAMES BARTON and featured OLGA SAN JUAN, TONY BAVAAR, JAMES MITCHELL, KAY MEDFORD, GEMZE DE LAPPE, MARY BURR, MARIJANE MARICLE, ROBERT PENN, JOHN RANDOLPH, RALPH BUNKER, JOSH WHEELER, RUFUS SMITH, GORDON DILWORTH, JACK DABDOUB and DAVE THOMAS ..... CREDITS: Music by FREDERICK LOEWE; Book and Lyrics by ALAN JAY LERNER (Lerner and Loewe collaborated on "Brigadoon", "Paint Your Wagon", "My Fair Lady", "Camelot" and "Gigi"); Sets designed by OLIVER SMITH; Costumes designed by MOTLEY; Choreographed by AGNES de MILLE; Directed by DANIEL MANN; Produced by CHERYL CRAWFORD ..... DETAILS: The single page, two-sided playbill measures 5 1/2" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "Sh" which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of creasing and light soiling in the lower left corner and minor edge wear, this rare broadside is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
